Family Assistance

Funds may be used to assist families with expenses not covered by many insurance policies.  Non-covered items might include ambulance service, air evacuation, some prescription medications, travel and lodging for heart surgeries that are not performed locally. Those seeking family assistance may contact the Nick & Kelly Children's Heart Fund through their patient's cardiologist, social worker, or other medical professional.

The Nick and Kelly Children's Heart Fund sponsors the following activities for Arizona families.

Camp

The Fund pays tuition and travel expenses (a total of $600 per child) for Arizona children with congenital heart defects to attend a non-profit, medically supervised residential summer camp on Catalina Island. The next dates for Nick and Kelly sponsored camp will be from August 23-27, 2012.

Camp Del Corazon is an organization that provides a medically supervised, residential summer camp for children ages 7-17 who are living with heart disease. Their main camp is located on Catalina Island, 22 miles off the California coastline, and each year has served approximately 300 children for the past 12 years.

The camp offers an opportunity to finally be 'normal', to forget their ailments and to connect with others who have had similar experiences and scars. Parents of children with heart conditions are often fearful that activities enjoyed by other kids could be harmful. There are very few camps with the ability or medically trained staff to provide for these special needs children, or places that their parents would trust.

Camp Del Corazon offers a full camping experience including sleeping in a cabin, nature walks, rock wall climbing, arts & crafts, and many other recreational activities and programs associated with a traditional summer camp. They also provide a setting that offers support and self-esteem building and socialization that these children do not otherwise might not experience.

Camp Del Corazon Provides:

A full range of camp activities -- including water sports

24 Hour monitoring by cardiologists & nurses

 Dispensing of medications

 Life-saving medical equipment

 Emotional support

 A life changing experience

Please visit Camp Del Corazon 's website.

Family Day Heart Talk

The Nick and Kelly Children's Heart Fund hosts Arizona heart patients and their families to attend a  symposium where pediatric cardiologists and other professionals present the most current information on congenital heart defect diagnosis and treatment.

While their parents attend the Symposium, medical personnel, other volunteers, and zoo staff treat the CHD patients and their siblings to a behind the scenes tour of the Phoenix Zoo. Teen CHD patients attend a special program designed specifically for their age group.

Family Day Heart Talk is March 3, 2012. Every group must submit a signed waiver. Please download it, fill it out and return it by postal mail or email.
